What are the 3 phases of hair growth?
• is the active growth phase. During this phase, the hair contains an abundance of melanin.
• is the regression phase. During this phase the lower part of the hair stops growing.
• is the resting phase. During this phase the old hair falls out with the preparation for the development of the new hair.
The laser works when the hair is in the anagen phase.
How is laser hair removal different from electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a tedious, invasive and painful process that involves inserting a needle into each hair follicle and delivering an electrical charge to destroy them one at a time. Electrolysis often requires years of treatments at regular intervals. Electrolysis kills one hair follicle at a time. The LightSheer diode laser delivers light energy non-invasively to hundreds of hair follicles at a time. So, in a few minutes, LightSheer laser can effectively treat an area that would take over an hour with electrolysis. Patient’s who have had both procedures say that Laser Hair Removal is less painful, faster and more convenient.
What are the other methods of removing hair?
In the past, the usual remedies for unwanted hair were plucking, shaving, chemical depilatories, waxing, or electrolysis. Some are painful, some are messy, and all are only temporary except electrolysis. However, there are other issues associated with electrolysis.
– Shaving is the most common method of hair removal. Virtually everyone owns a razor, but shaving only lasts a few days and requires a constant commitment to maintain a hair-free appearance. It only removes hair slightly above the surface of the skin.
– Plucking has slightly longer results than shaving, but it is quite painful. Plucking is tedious and impractical
– Another short-term method, which is extremely time consuming, as the cream must remain applied until the hair is fully dissolved. Many people find that the cream has an unpleasant odor and that the process is very messy.
– Lasting up to 6 to 8 weeks, this method removes hair from the follicle bed, but does not destroy the follicle itself. Therefore, the hair does re-grow. Some find this method painful and it can cause skin irritation and pimples. Additionally, waxing may also distort the hair follicles and make other hair removal techniques more difficult.
– Electrolysis is a procedure that uses a needle to follow the hair follicle down to kill the bulb. The procedure is done once a week for approximately 23 to 36 weeks. It is widely used for grey and blond/white hair. Just like laser, you will see a difference after every treatment; however each hair follicle has to be killed six times for the follicle to be permanently destroyed. After approximately 6 months you should be able to start monthly (instead of weekly) treatments until you are done. Clients who have had both have said that laser is faster, less painful and more convenient. However, both modalities are equally effective.
There is a possibility with electrolysis of some scabbing due to the electrode being inserted subcutaneously into each follicle but this will only last a few days.
Is the treatment effective for all skin types?
Yes. The FDA has approved the laser used by Elite Laser Hair as safe and effective for all skin types.
What skin type am I and how will it effect the amount of treatments I will need?
Your skin type is based on the following:
- Type 1 always burn and never tans
- Type 2 usually burns and tans less than average
- Type 3 sometimes mildly burns and tans above average
- Type 4 rarely burns and tans more than average
- Type 5 very rarely burns and tans easily
- Type 6 does not burn and tans easily
Skin types 1-4 usually take a package of 12 to 14 laser hair treatments to effectively get the job done. Skin types 5-6 usually take a package of 16 to 22 laser hair treatments to effectively get the job done.
What about the different hair types?
Humans have 4 distinct hair types:
- Eyebrows and eyelashes
- Axillary (underarm) & lower and upper pubic hair
- Facial, ear, extremities, body hair
- Scalp hair
All types respond differently to natural hormones occurring in different amounts in both men and women. Not all hair is visible on the surface of your skin. Hair growth goes between active and resting stages. On your head, above 90% of your hair is in the active growing stage that can last up to 7 years. The growing cycle of your body hair lasts only for a few months and as much as 30% of your hair is in the resting stage. This explains why you most likely need more than one treatment for removal of hair on back, chest and legs.

How many treatments do I need?
How long is each session?
Depending on the amount of hair and the size of the area being treated, the sessions can vary from a few minutes to an hour.
Who performs the laser hair removal?
Does the treatment hurt?
One of the benefits of laser hair removal is that it is virtually painless, especially compared with waxing or electrolysis. For the occasional patient who experiences discomfort with the LightSheer Laser Hair Removal, your doctor may prescribe a Novocain type of topical cream, which should be applied 1 hour prior to treatment. This helps minimize discomfort. The LightSheer has a cooling tip, which also cools your skin during treatment. Each person’s pain tolerance is different and most people may feel nothing at all. If necessary, a topical cream is used.
Is the treatment safe?
Yes, the laser beam has been carefully designed for selective destruction of hair follicles with no damage to the surrounding skin.
How is the appearance of the treated area after the treatment?
The appearance of the treated area immediately after the laser session will vary from client to client depending on the extent of the treatment and the skin type. Immediate after effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling, which disappears in a short time. Most people return to normal activity right away. Occasionally crusting or pigment changes, which are temporary, can develop.
Are there any pre-treatment restrictions?
Yes, the following should be avoided prior to treatment: The follicle beneath the skin contains the melanin that the laser targets; thus, waxing, plucking and electrolysis should be avoided for 3 weeks prior to treatments. Avoid sun tanning to the area treated. Discuss any skin diseases you might have.
Is laser hair removal for men?
Yes, many of our patients are men. After receiving treatment they are very happy and refer others to our offices. Laser hair removal for men is a popular solution for excessive hair on back, chests and legs. Many athletic men enjoy the benefits of laser hair removal as a way to achieve better athletic results. Removal of unwanted hair in the nose and the ears can also give you that added confidence you so much desire. Additionally, men who have gained a level of fitness and muscle tone don’t want to hide their attractive muscles behind a thick coating of hair.
Why does the hair sometimes look like its growing 1-3 weeks after laser treatment?
Laser destroys hair roots, which are active at the time of treatment, but do not remove hair shafts instantly. Hair shafts in the treated hair follicles will fall out mostly in the first week after treatment, with all the treated hairs falling out within 2-3 weeks. It is normal that some hairs in the treated areas may not fall within 2-3 weeks. These will be treated in the next session. These hairs, which are being shed, will come out on their own. It is best not to shave the treated area or wash it with anything but mild soap and your bare hands (no washcloths or body washes) for 3-4 days after laser treatment. This might cause the skin to get irritated.
Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?
Usually you can return to work the same day and resume all your regular activities. To reduce the chance of uneven tanning in the treated areas, you should minimize sun exposure and tanning for a week or two after treatments. It is OK to resume shaving or clipping hair in the treated area after 3-4 days. You should NOT have waxing, plucking or electrolysis, because these temporarily remove pigmented hairs from the hair roots and reduce the effectiveness of your next laser treatment. Sometimes after plucking or waxing the hair will become thicker and darker, because one of the ways that the body defends itself from chronic irritation is to produce thicker, darker hairs. Shaving is really the best temporary way to remove unwanted hair before laser treatment and between laser treatments. Shaving leaves the hair shafts in the hair follicles, so the hair shaft can be a target for laser energy.
Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?
The unique design of the LightSheer Lumenis Diode (400ms) and the long wavelengths, allow treatment of people with all skin colors, and even treatment of light brown hair. Hair which is naturally blonde, light red, or white does not have enough pigments in the roots. A smaller number of treatments are needed when the hair is dark and the skin is light colored. To get the maximum effect from each session avoid tanning.Even people who have black skin can be successfully treated with Lumenis Diode Light Sheer Laser Hair Removal equipment.
Lumenis LightSheer Diode laser hair device is not just for clients that have cosmetic problems. Clients with excess hair because of medications can benefit from the Lumenis LightSheer Diode Laser hair removal system as can clients who have problems with ingrown hair and follicles under the prosthetic devices.
Many people at some time before the laser hair treatment will have fears and doubts. A common concern is that they are being vain. Our experience has been that just about all clients who have laser hair removal are no more vain than anyone else. What distinguishes them is a desire to get the most out of life. Looking after our appearance is not a fault. After all would you leave your house with broken gutters or peeling paint? Why would you not do as much for your body? We think you should feel proud of yourself for having the courage to want to change something that you find unacceptable. We emphasize that you should only have laser hair removal if it is for you.
